This essay explores how the neopastoral aesthetic on Instagram is part of a larger narrative of commodification, born of imperialism and settler-colonialism and nurtured by Euro-American philosophies. I argue that in capitalizing on fantasies of a wild and empty land, the call to #liveauthentic yields to nostalgia, exclusion, and colonial erasure.
